Our contribution:

Lower emissions

and waste

CO2 emissions

We have proactively reduced our annual CO2 emissions by more than 10 million kilograms since 2005. That is like removing 2,040 cars from the road – for an entire year.

How? With the help of Kaizen thinking. For example, we have become more energy-conscious while operating our plastic moulding machinery in St. Niklaas, Belgium. This alone saves approximately 2500 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Since 2005, our Esselte operations have reduced total water consumption by an incredible 49%. Which by far exceeds our original target! This amounts to a total savings of about 25 million litres – enough water to meet the average daily needs of 165,000 Europeans!

Stewardship of paper & raw materials

Paper and paper-based materials form a large part of our product portfolio. It is our duty to manage this resource in the best-possible way. By recycling and using recycled materials when possible – and using responsibly-sourced paper and board when it is not.

Our targets: recycle more than 99% of our manufacturing waste, and use 100% recycled or FSC certified paper in all our manufacturing. We are extremely close to reaching both of these targets with broad recycling programmes in all factories and clear purchasing policies for paper and board.

Esselte earned the Forest Stewardship Council FSC® certification in 2011, which allows us to process and sell FSC certified paper and board. Currently, 24 of our sites and more than 1,300 Esselte products are FSC certified.

Health and safety

By prioritising workplace safety and the well-being of our employees, we have reduced the number of accidents in our European factories by more than 50% since 2005. Our goal: completely eliminate on-the-job accidents.

Focus on suppliers and customers

We value long-term relationships with suppliers and customers, built solidly on our mutual trust. Moreover, our lean program encourages close collaboration with both, to increase our efficiency and decrease our waste. This helps us, for example, to minimise our logistic efforts and avoid incorrect deliveries.

Monitoring our pool of carefully chosen suppliers is our priority. We ask them to sign and adhere to our supplier code of conduct, and management and a team of third-party auditors regularly follow up.
